I just came back from watching Avengers: Infinity War. I have mixed emotions on the entire event. Perhaps its because I've read The Infinity Gauntlet on which this film is based and various other Marvel comics that make their imprint on the movie. Let me get right to the good stuff before hitting the spoilers and the areas I felt were problematic.
The film is a great superhero action spectacle. If you're a fan of action movies you'll enjoy this movie, and then some. The action sequences are very well done, and it's great seeing so many of my favorite Marvel heroes on the silver screen at the same time.
Thanos is a great supervillain. He's one of the best in the entire Marvel universe. The Avengers save humanity from threats like Thanos. It's what they do. His characterization in the film was great.
Another high-point of the film is Dr. Strange. There needs to be more Dr. Strange goodness. Benedict Cumberbatch is Dr. Strange and it's a delight to watch him cast spells.
Iron Man brought his A-game. There were a lot of great action sequences with Iron Man. He is certainly a powerhouse in this film.
Spider-Man was a great addition. Lots of great web-slinging goodness mixed with Peter Parker's witty banter.
Other shining moments include Scarlet Witch casting hex spells and Thor descending from the Heavens like the god he is.
Now for the parts that I felt were a bit of a let down. Perhaps "let down" is too strong of a phrase, but for lack of a better phrase I'll use it for the time being.
Too much Guardians of the Galaxy. I know people love those films, I'm sort of "meh" on them myself. However, the title of the film is Avengers: Infinity War and I felt like it was really Guardians of the Galaxy: Infinity War.
The Hulk and Vision were completely neutered. The Hulk is barely in the film. Either the producers didn't have the CG budget to include him (doubtful) or they needed to keep the power level of the superheroes at bay. Vision is arguably one of the most powerful superheroes in the 616. Vision spends a majority of his screen-time on his back. Literally.
Captain America and Winter Soldier were minor footnotes. It's an Avengers movie, and Mr. Avenger (Captain America) was hardly in it.
I was confused about Red Skull. I'll just leave it at that.
Last but not least, there is one last thing that I'm really excited about. Carol Danvers. If you read comic books, then you'll know what I mean.
