Creative writing and the joy of finding new paths

I started writing a story. It’s a story I’ve had brewing in the back of my mind for about 10 years. I only now started to write it because I felt I had enough understanding of the story’s direction to put hands on keyboard.

I find it amazing how quickly things change.

I always felt I need a good grasp on the story’s details before I started writing. However, since I started, the characters surprised me by taking on a life of their own. Before I knew it, my characters were doing and saying things I did not expect. I did the only thing I could do, I followed.

The character I thought was going to be the main character, isn’t really the main one anymore. The villain’s voice surprised me and I began to understand this individual. There is still a lot more to write, and the story is developing nicely. I’m quite pleased with it. I think the official first draft of the story will be a novella.

The story started about fairies, but with a childlike innocence. The story morphed into a story about fairies as sorcerers with a dark twist. So far I like it.

Once I get the story written, I’ll go back and edit everything. I’ll see if I should make it longer. I plan to publish this as an ebook (at least) when I’m through.
