There are folks who keep games running long after the games should have died a digital death. Museums, collectors, 'preservists'--call them what you will. Many gamers believe they do a service to the gaming community to keep these texts playable for future generations. Unfortunately there are legal issues that have crept up that essentially say, "you can't hack a game to keep it running after the designers have shut it down."
Those of us who believe games are art, or at least digital texts that speak to our culture and history, are naturally concerned by this turn of events.
