Defining terms of liberty

We are several days into a society nearly crippled by fear and hysteria over a virus. This post is not about the virus itself. Rather, this post is a reflection about how easy we live to liberty being obliterated in the name of security for the collective.

I find that my attention has turned to writings by men far smarter than I. Men who, a 100+ years ago, cherished the ideas of liberty over oppression, economic freedom over collective responsibility, free markets over socialism. One thing that strikes me about these writings is the lack of clarity, or rather, the lack of alignment between a proposed thesis and their crafted arguments. While their writings are quite succinct and applicable, even to today’s current events, I feel their arguments are a bit wasted because of their lack of alignment.

What we need is a definition of several things so people can easily follow and understand the concept of individual liberty over a collectivist hellscape.

We can’t just talk about liberty. We need to define what liberty means. We can’t talk about values. We need to define what values are. We can’t talk about principles. We must define what principles are and how they differ from values.
